To mark the end of term, RCS students enjoyed a hands-on science practical that was both fun and educational. As part of their chemistry learning, some of our Year 9 and Year 10 students took part in a fascinating activity where they had the chance to ‘gold plate’ coins.
In this experiment, students electroplated copper coins with zinc, and then carefully heated them to form a thin outer layer of brass, a golden-coloured alloy. This process not only demonstrated the principles of electrochemistry and alloy formation, but also gave students a real sense of achievement as they saw their coins transform before their eyes.
A special mention goes to Ethan, whose result was one of the most successful of the day. His attention to detail and commitment to the process were truly outstanding – a great example of curiosity and precision in science.
